Our Family Weekend on a Budget with #oreocookiequest

For a family that live on a small budget we generally go out at least once a weekend. Whether we have planned in advance a larger trip like a theme park or like this weekend a trip to the cinema and a few trips to the local parks. All of our trips are focused on spending quality time together so when I heard about The Great Oreo Cookie Quest I thought it would be a great opportunity to show you how we spend time together as a family on a budget.

Tip: Be prepared, one of the best way to keep costs low (after discounted entry) is where possible take your own food and drink. If out for the whole day a pile of sandwiches, crisps and fruit will see anyone through lunch. But don’t forget snacks and Oreos are a fun and tasty occasional treat for the whole family so an easy on to carry in your bag.

Saturday: Cinema

The cinema for a family of 5 can be expensive. We now mainly see junior movies (maybe called something different in your local cinema), yes they are not new movies but they are to my children and that is really all that matters. They are also full of families so noise is acceptable which with two toddlers this is a must. How cheap the tickets are I don’t also mind if I end up going on a few toilet breaks and a nappy change run. This week we went to see Ferdinand, if you haven’t seen it we highly recommend the movie we were all laughing a lot and its a lovely story.

We are lucky that our cinema is a larger chain and you can take your own snacks (not hot) so we took along a packet of our oreos to enjoy as a family. The children took a drink that they had picked in the food shopping that felt like a great treat and I may have treated myself to a latte that I got to enjoy hot so winning at life right there (I am going to say it an Oreo is delicious dunked in a coffee)!

Sunday: Park

The local parks are a large part of the families weekend. Whether it is an afternoon of fun or a short trip before swimming we are usually at least one each weekend. This weekend my son and I went to the park before swimming it was a little wet from the overnight rain so we played tig, I have honestly never felt more my age when having to run away from a 7 year old. It was lovely to spend time with him by himself, as a mum of three time for each child can feel like it is spread quite thin.

Tip:  Plan ahead! We already have next weekend planned we know if we are going to visit somewhere or not. This allows you to work in a trip on budget and allows you to buy what you need in your weekly food shop.

How do you like to spend your family weekends?
